Abstract

This paper analyses the history of the complex and varied memory of the Paris Commune of 1871. On the one hand, the condemnatory memory of the Paris Commune that was above all cultivated at the beginning of the Third French Republic is explained. On the other hand, the vindicating history of this memory, which quickly made the Paris Commune an inspiring and admirable central historical reference and the first proletarian revolution in history is also analysed. This positive memory was developed in different ways especially at three junctures: in the years immediately after its crushing, in the context of the Russian Revolution and in that of the Parisian May ‘68. An additional purpose is to use this example to reflect on the peculiarities of the history of memory, to analyse its multiple uses and to try to understand its role in history. The focus is on the plural, dynamic, productive, asymmetrical, discontinuous and exaptative character of memory, but also on its prospective dimension. After all, the memory of the Commune was from the beginning, and for a long time, a sort of revolution of hope: not a kind of «past past» but a «present past» and even a «future past» that served to inspire and mobilize future generations.
