Abstract

The article focuses on the representations of physicians in the nineteenth-century visual culture in Spain and in France. The analysis of images, that were mostly beyond the physicians’ control, shows the great transformations of the profession and of medical science (though we focus on the former) and also the inner tensions within the profession during that period: the will to achieve a place among the social elites as individuals and as a group, the oscillation between stressing altruistic heroism and the need and the will to receive fees that would allow them to live as gentlemen, the conflicts regarding the position of women in the medical field. From a comparative and a transnational perspective, the article uses visual culture to shed light on the role of social class and gender in the transformation of medicine as a profession.
