Solidaridad, libertad y antifranquismo. El activismo transnacional de las mujeres anarquistas en la lucha armada contra la dictadura en los años sesenta

Abstract

In the 1960s, some of the young Spanish anarchists in exile turned their struggle against Francoism towards terrorist action. The organisation of the groups «Defensa Interior» and «Primero de Mayo», among others, was a sign of a break with the leading cadres of the Spanish Libertarian Movement, whom they accused of immobility and inaction. In addition to the strategic divergences, we must also consider the generational change as a major element in this anti-Francoist struggle initiative. There are two particularly important elements in the dynamics of these armed groups. On the one hand, among their activists and in their support networks we find a considerable number of women. On the other hand, their transnational character, since alongside the Spaniards, some of their young comrades of different nationalities – French, English, Scottish and Italian, among others – take part in these actions. This paper is twofold. Firstly, it aims a analyse the militant role of the women who took part in the activities of these groups. In this sense, we must qualify the male predominance in both the direct action and the memory of these groups by highlighting the action of the numerous women activists – Ariane Gransac, Brenda Earl, Julia Hermosilla, Alicia Mur and Eliane Vincileone, to name but a few examples. Secondly, we wish to highlight the militant anti-Francoist commitment of a group of women whose lives – for reasons of exile and/or militancy – are deeply marked by their internationalist convictions and by their transnational action in their day-to-day activism.
