¿Resistentes a Europa? El discurso europeo del Partido Comunista de España e Izquierda Unida entre la adhesión y el Tratado de Niza (1985-2002)

Abstract

The Spanish Communist Party and Izquierda Unida developed a thoroughly critical discourse on European integration and construction during the last two decades of the 20th century. This discourse on Europe had already changed in 1972, at the last congress of the party held abroad, when it shifted from a vision much more aligned with the orthodox Marxism of Soviet stamp to one closer to Western Marxism, especially in harmony with the positions and visions developed by the Italian Communist Party. Thus, the «European question» gained in importance from the year 1979, the year in which negotiations for Spain’s entry into the European Economic Community began, starting to strengthen even more in 1985 and 1986, the last year of these negotiations and the year of Spain’s entry into the European Economic Community, respectively. This critical stance continued to be maintained and reinforced after the celebration of the I PCE Days on Europe in 1987 and solidifying and expanding in 1989, when what we have called the National Conference on Europe took place. Thus, these critical or resistant positions towards Europe and European integration were presented against the signing and approval of the treaties of Maastricht, Amsterdam, and Nice, contributing these milestones in the history of European integration to make this issue a top concern and interest for the PCE and Izquierda Unida during the years analyzed in this article.
