Abstract

The Battle of the Ebro (1938) was the decisive battle of the Spanish Civil War. The defeat of the Popular Army led to the occupation of Catalonia and to the final victory of General Franco’s forces over the Spanish Republic. The victors placed monuments on the battlefield to stage their success, but patrimonial action had limited development while World War II and its outcome opened uncertain prospects for General Franco’s regime. The death of the dictator in 1975 made political changes possible in Spain, and the historical spaces of the Battle of the Ebro, subsidiaries of the social and political imaginaries of the democratization process, met new interventions around their heritage. New monuments and museums invited an interpretation of the battle compatible with the imaginary of reconciliation developed by the new constitutional regime. Decades after the event, the battle of the Ebro continued, but now the struggle was established in terms of models and actions to fix memory in the territory, on the basisof heritage interventions, museums, monuments and sculptures. In the context of democratic emergence at the beginning of the 21st century, civil society initiatives added to the dynamics of research and socialization of knowledge promoted in terms of Public History and Public Archaeology and opened new perspectives in the recovery of a republican memory of the battle. The initiatives of the research group «Didáctica del Patrimonio» (DIDPATRI) of the University of Barcelona stand out in this context. The study approximates the different phases of appropriation, in terms of historical memory, of the Ebro battlefield, and the main initiatives and casuistries of patrimonialization generated, in its surroundings, at different historical moments.
