Abstract

In this study, we analyse the critical vision expressed by Manuel Sacristán after 1968, both of the international communist movement also as the political line followed by the PSUC. The events of that year, including the French May and the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, shook the Western communist parties and their militants, which for Sacristán led to a profound and pessimistic criticism that would result in his resignation from the leadership bodies of the PSUC in 1969. Since his arrival at the University of Barcelona in 1956, Manuel Sacristán was a point of reference for students opposed to Franco’s regime, which is why he was commissioned to write the founding declaration of the Democratic Students’ Union, and also for the intellectual and professional sectors of the communism. It is not an exaggeration to consider him the main philosopher of Marxism in Spain at this time, maintaining at the same time a constant militant practice. But despite his political and intellectual importance, his reflections have been little studied until very recently and especially neglected academically. There are two essential reasons for this: on the one hand, his own heterodoxy and, on the other, the fact that his dissent was expressed internally at the time, leaving few public documents and, therefore, the possibilities we have of knowing it in the same terms in which it was produced at his time are scarce. That is why we have reconstructed it based on the party’s internal documentation, centered on many arguments between Sacristán and the leadership that have the university movement as their main focus, but which transcend it and provide us with important elements for understanding his vision of the communist movement after 1968 in its most global dimension.
